Great point, Michael! I've often had these thoughts but found it hard to articulate - the protest built into the music. Provocative music can be a reaction to a particular era, a style that musicians develop in reaction to other musics of that time. One could say that PE built their sound up against the pop-rap hit makers of the day - MC Hammer, etc. So not only can protest musicians be seen making lyrical comments on the larger culture - Fugazi, the Sex Pistols, for example - but looking inward at music itself and in opposition to, mostly, commercial/corporatized music trends. That's part of the equation, too. Excellent post and too bad it didn't make the Journal...
