Loved this. Christmas is far off now, but the message should resonate year-round. I too believe watching this as a kid affected me in a similarly profound way. Just as you, it was this show that introduced the complex idea of commercialism to my 8-year-old self. Sometimes I relate with that bummer of a kid Charlie Brown, but at least I feel I can't be fooled by the pandering corporations who want to get into my head. I can smell it a mile away. As a result, I feel more human.
